Duplicity of the B.C. Provincial Government ~ Anyone Surprised!
Quick, fake a gasp.
Why does it seem like the average middle class tax paying citizen always gets shafted by the very governments that promise to offer tax relief to make our lives less burdensome? Articles in the Vancouver Sun highlight the duplicity of government and how they just can't be trusted.
According to the Vancouver Sun:
“B.C. Liberal party Leader Christy Clark has defended a little-known provincial tax rebate program that was expanded in 2014 to attract international banks and investment firms to Vancouver and is possibly linked to greater amounts of overseas cash coming into the local real estate market.” Sam Cooper, May 3, 2017
And on the matter of buyers and sellers reporting their residency status to determine their capital gains exemption eligibility, the Vancouver Sun also reports:
“B.C. fails to create data that can be checked by Canada Revenue Agency, by not asking the right question. Instead, the B.C. government has begun asking, ‘What is your citizenship?’ But that’s irrelevant.”
The article had also stated that:
“That task is inexplicably left to a real-estate industry “honour system” involving buyers, sellers and their agents, says Vancouver immigration lawyer Sam Hyman, who is among several experts offering a simple solution.” Douglas Todd, April 1, 2017
As Realtors we are expected to report any suspicious money transactions and we are also supposed to report a client's residency status. We've had absolutely no training and even our ongoing educational course requirements don't provide any guidance on what we are supposed to look for and the limits of our ability to delve into a client's private affairs.
In both cases the responsibility and the necessary due diligence should be conducted by the provincial and federal governments who let these people into the country to begin with. The federal government in particular likes to pass the buck onto Realtors (and other professionals) when in fact the bureaucrats who approve the admission of immigrants into Canada should be held fully responsible.
The duplicity of governments at all levels is astounding. They take no responsibility for their actions and continue to throw up smoke screens to appear like they are doing something for the average middle class Canadian tax payer, when in fact they are often the cause of many of our socially engineered problems.
